These self-reported indicators are not factored into school accountability calculations but provide the opportunity for schools to highlight successful programs or practices in addition to the indicators included in school accountability.

Every Child a Reader
We, at North Star, believe every child can and should learn to read. As Victor Hugo once noted, “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” We believe that providing students with the gift of reading will light pathways in their life that may have previously been darkened, and to do so requires us to ignite many little sparks throughout the day. To this end, each classroom teacher identifies reading levels for all their students through Acadience and Reading Inventory assessments. The information gained from such assessments enables us to identify ways in which we can support and strengthen each student’s reading abilities and provide appropriate intervention and enrichment on a daily basis. In order to ensure that this opportunity exists for all students, we set aside time each day within the school’s schedule to focus specifically on supporting and enriching literacy for all students. We are committed to helping all students read at or above grade-level.
The Whole Child
North Star believes all students can develop the necessary skills to engage in academic inquiry, collaborative dialogue, and socially appropriate interactions, which support a whole-child approach to learning. We provide an environment for students to explore learning cooperatively through high-yielding engagement strategies that are both challenging and growth-oriented. We believe every learning experience should inspire happiness and optimism. This guiding philosophy sets the foundation for all students to develop a growth mindset to engage in a healthy, academic productive struggle. North Star teachers provide the necessary supports for students to read, write, speak, and listen as part of daily instruction—student engagement, and peer-to-peer interaction, is a critical component of what we do to ensure students learn at high levels. As a result of consistent peer-to-peer interaction, students gain a greater sense of community and belonging, which builds a child’s capacity to interact with others in positive ways. As a result, North Star students are academically strengthened, emotionally nurtured, and socially supported.
