Schools may choose to describe up to two additional pieces of information about how their school is supporting students. These self-reported indicators are not factored into school accountability calculations but provide the opportunity for schools to highlight successful programs or practices in addition to the indicators included in school accountability.

Teaming Structure

Bryant Middle School works in partnership with the Salt Lake Center for Science Education (SLCSE). As per a school board decision voted upon in the December 2018 board meeting, Bryant and SLCSE are one school at 2 sites. In shifting our focus to emphasize STEM curriculum we have implemented a core content teaming structure school wide for the 2019-2020 school year. This structure supports equitable education, enables teachers to get to know their students well, allows flexibility, and encourages cross-curricular projects. In the teaming structure, science and math classes are 1.5 periods each and students are enrolled in a cohort that rotates through the same math, science, social studies, and language arts teachers. A student’s team of teachers work together to build content, culture, and management strategies. Teaming time can be rearranged to group students in creative ways. Teams have common planning time to work together on cross-curricular projects that are differentiated to meet the needs of individuals.

Well-being Initiative

Bryant Middle School is committed to providing positive experiences for all of our school community. We value all students and do our very best to provide the specific support each individual needs to reach their full potential. Our goal is to create a safe academic environment where students and teachers thrive, enjoy coming to school each day, take care of each other, and work hard to become fully prepared for the future. Our Well-being Initiative is a big part of how we are working to accomplish this. The system is tiered to meet the needs of each individual student. Tier 3: We provide individual therapy for students with the greatest need. Tier 2: Group therapy and counseling provides students with support in specific areas such as problem solving, anger management, anxiety, and grief. Tier 1: All students receive weekly lessons in social-emotional well-being through teacher led activities. We are in our second year of fully implementing our well-being initiative. We have multiple measureable positive outcomes related to the program. One of these outcomes is a reduction in office referrals. As of Friday, November 15th, 2019 we are tracking to have a 48% reduction in the number of office referrals compared to last year. In looking at suspension data we see another positive outcome. Bryant Middle School is on pace to have a 77% reduction in suspensions when this year’s data is extrapolated and compared to last year’s.
