Equitable Access to Educational Opportunities

Whittier Elementary School assists English Language Learners (ELL) to become fluent in English by using the SLCSD adopted curriculum called Wonders for ELs. Whittier students receive daily instruction for 45 minutes in oral and written language development. This program is designed to grow students’ proficiency in oral and written language.We monitor our students' annual progress with World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA)


INSTRUCTIONAL FACTORS

Social Emotional Learning

Whittier Elementary school supported our students’ social emotional learning with school wide teaching of the evidence-based instructional program called 2nd Step. The 2nd Step scope and sequence provides students with grade appropriate lessons on skills for learning empathy, emotional management, and problem solving. Our school adopted this curriculum after compiling Educators’ Handbook data on campus incidents of aggression, and after receiving and processing multiple reports of suicide threats among our elementary age children. In addition to 2nd Step, the school provides the recess-rich programming called Playworks. Playworks provides curriculum and training to build students' skills in communication, collaboration, and problem solving. Whittier is in it's 2nd year with a Playworks full time coach.
