Full Time Beverly Taylor Sorenson Music Specialist
Southland Elementary is proud to offer all students a full time music teacher through the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Program. The music teacher works with classroom teachers in order to support the general education curriculum by integrating core subjects into music. Collaborative efforts between classroom teachers and the music teacher have resulted in students being able to prepare for and present musical programs that include a yearly Holiday Program, Chinese New Year Program, Veteran's Day Program, and many more. Students are given opportunities to create, perform, explore, connect to, and respond to music. They are exposed to new genres, taught music theory, music history, and are able to learn about and play a variety of instruments. In total the music teacher at Southland Elementary teaches 802 students over the course of one school year.

After School Activities
At Southland Elementary, a variety of after school enrichment activities are offered to our students. Many of these activities are funded and facilitated by our Parent Teacher Organization, while others are led and directed by teachers. Some of the programs offered at Southland Elementary include: -Chess Team, on average 90 students participate -Christmas Choir, on average 130 students participate -Girls Who Code, on average 17 students participate -School Musical, on average 100 students participate -Math Team, on average 100 students participate -Battle of the Books, on average 4 students participate -Mandarin Time (Chinese Competition), on average 28 students in grades 4-6 participate -4th Grade STEM Team, on average 30 students participate - Leadership Team Activities including: PE, Service, Leadership Crew, Safety Patrol, Announcements, Bully Blockers, Kindness Team, etc., on average 145 students participate -3rd Grade Science Team, on average 60 students participate
