Schools may choose to describe up to two additional pieces of information about how their school is supporting students. These self-reported indicators are not factored into school accountability calculations but provide the opportunity for schools to highlight successful programs or practices in addition to the indicators included in school accountability.

Indicator 1

Domain: "School-Level Factors"

Title: "STEM Focus in School and Afterschool Activities"

Description: Mountainville Academy is a State Designated Silver STEM school. Our focus is to achieve academic and personal excellence in a challenging and innovative STEM environment. Because of our small class sizes, we are able to concentrate on providing personalized learning in our STEM instruction and the choices we offer for afterschool activities. Our 5th grade classes have a STEM specialty class taught weekly by one of our Middle School Science teachers, who also facilitates our Space Lab. We offer multiple elective choices related to STEM for our Middle School students. We provide a strong traditional foundation in Language Arts and History for our entire student body as well as our strong STEM focus. This prepares our students for an increasingly technological and diverse society.

Indicator 2

Domain: "Instructional Factors"

Title: "Implementation of Social and Emotional Curriculum"

Description: Mountainville Academy was the school in Utah to achieve the Leader in Me (7 Habits) Lighthouse School status. The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation process that empowers students with leadership and life skills to thrive in the 21st century. The process starts with a powerful paradigm: every child has unique strengths and talents that they can use to lead. This paradigm allows the staff and community to encourage the development of the whole child. Common language of the 7 Habits allows understanding and responsibility of each child to showcase their leadership. Our students are able to choose action teams to demonstrate leadership, serve each other, and our school. The Leader in Me teaches leadership principles; creates a leadership culture; and aligns academic systems into existing programs, curricula, and traditions. The Leader in Me serves as a foundational operating system for our school, improving relationships, transforming culture and intrinsically motivating staff and students. Lighthouse Certification comes as a result of implementing The Leader in Me program with fidelity at Mountainville Academy. We measure outcomes in three areas: teaching leadership principles, creating a leadership culture and aligning academic systems.
