INSTRUCTIONAL FACTORS

Social & Emotional Programs Implemented

During the 2019-2020 school year, Clayton staff members implemented a variety of school wide systems revolving around social and emotional supports for students. Second Steps, a program that focuses on anti-bullying and anti-harassment, was taught to students on a regular basis. The Mindful Schools program teachers students mindfulness practices and stress reduction techniques. Our counselors and social worker held monthly and weekly groups teaching these coping mechanisms to students and staff. To incorporate our Clayton community beyond the walls of the school, the Community of Caring program is taught by parents and volunteers monthly. This program promotes positive relationships with others. After implementing these programs, Clayton saw a drop in behavior referrals and an increase in academic success of students.

There are six performance results: Complex thinker and problem solver, effective communicator, cooperative group participant and leader, contributor to the community, quality worker and producer, and self-directed learner. Each month teachers instruct students on what it means to have the characteristics at school and in the community. This program has created a school climate of equality, togetherness, and empathy. Academic rigor and success increases each year as this program becomes more sustainable.
