SELF-REPORTED INDICATORS

Schools may choose to describe up to two additional pieces of information about how their school is supporting students. These self-reported indicators are not factored into school accountability calculations but provide the opportunity for schools to highlight successful programs or practices in addition to the indicators included in school accountability.

SCHOOL-LEVEL FACTORS

Social Emotional Learning / Advisory Program

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) is a critical program element at the Salt Lake Arts Academy that has been designed to support every student. Students are placed in a weekly Advisory class. Advisors teach lessons found in a number of SEL programs and curricula, including Common Sense Media, Choose Love, TRIBES and No Bully, and offer a safe environment to discuss important issues that relate to students'' lives. The Arts Academy recognizes that a socially strong and healthy community is built upon daily actions within the classroom that support the foundational skills in SEL: self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. All of the teachers understand the importance of these elements and are committed to making them a daily part of their instruction. All teachers have attended professional training to build classrooms where SEL is the foundation to their environment.

STUDENT FACTORS

School wide Arts Instruction

One of the signature indicators of success at the Salt Lake Arts Academy is the school wide daily Arts Program. In 5th Grade, every student moves through Level I in each of the arts offered -- music, dance, drama, and visual arts, with each subsequent year building increased proficiency as students select the art form they wish to pursue more deeply. By 8th Grade, students are performing at a Level 3 in one or more art forms. Mastery is measured through performance assessments that include skill development, creative application and effort.
